Baghapurana (Punjab), Sep 12 (IANS): Aiming to target a major vote bank in the state, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday promised to make farmers in Punjab debt free by end of 2018 if the party was voted to power in assembly elections early next year.
Expelled Congress leader and Punjab Lokhit Abhiyan chief Jagmeet Singh Brar on Monday said he was not averse to fighting Assembly polls on the AAP symbol even as he heaped praise on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
“The restoration, and revival of Punjab is the point of Awaaz-e-Punjab”, said the cricketer turned politician, who had resigned as Rajya Sabha member in July, likewise leaving the BJP, his party for over 10 years.
Following his suspension, Sehrawat took it to Twitter and posted: “Singer Shama Bhatt Accuses AAP Candidate Dev Mann of Molestation, Party needs serious rethink & sensitiveness on women exploitation reports”.
Blaming “conservative” politics practised by SAD and Congress for “halting” the progress of the state, he said he will work hard to influence people’s mind against both the rival parties. Opposition MLAs, including Gidderbaha legislator and Indian Youth Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, gestured to Amritsar (east) MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu to join them, to which she refused.
The action comes after the party’s national Convener Arvind Kejriwal returned to Delhi wrapping up his four-day visit to poll-bound Punjab. “Punjab has no surplus water”. Sidhu, a former Bharatiya Janata Party MP, said his front wanted to “shake the system that had ruined the state”, adding that “those with vested interests can not accomplish this”. “I wonder why can’t he (Amarinder) face the truth about the Badals?” he asked, adding that the state Congress chief behaved like “an advocate of the ruling family of Punjab”.
