ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1 with SD636, pure Android 8.1 Oreo launched

Taiwanese electronics company Asus launched a new smartphone in affordable range in India in exclusive partnership with Flipkart. Thankfully, unlike the Zenfone 5 (2018) series, the new Zenfone Max Pro (M1) has no notch on top. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Mobile Platform, with Adreno 509 graphics and runs on pure Android 8.1. This is 1000mAh more than both the Redmi Note 5 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The phone will be made available across in Midnight Black and Grey colour options. The variant also comes with enhanced camera functions. There have been a lot of smartphone launches after Xiaomi launched Note 5 Pro in India, but still, there is no phone that can give a tough competition to it.

ZenFone Max Pro delivers 41% louder sound, 14% better low-frequency response and 12% less distortion. The display has a contrast ratio of 1500:1 and a brightness value of 450 nits. The phone while being offered in two capacity versions, use the same SoC which happens to be the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chip. The more premium 6GB RAM units will have 16MP+8MP main and 16MP selfie snappers.

Asus has also claimed that the Max Pro M1 will be 50 percent faster than the leading smartphones in this segment with a 1.54x performance boost over Snapdragon 625. The handset also supports a microSD card slot for memory expansion.

Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n with Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.2 (with aptX), GPS/ A-GPS, BDS, GLONASS, Micro-USB, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Earlier leaks have indicated that the Zenfone Max Pro M1 will have stock Android out of the box, instead of the Zen UI that is usually found on all Asus devices. If not for the Google Search bar at the top, the interface e would look just like the one of the Google Pixel 2. It can run for two working days on a single charge with regular use. When I first heard about the phone coming up with a phone with such huge battery, I thought the weight would be over 200grams, but Asus has done a great job in keeping the device to 180grams.

Winner: Zenfone Max Pro, clearly!

In the camera department, the Zenfone Max Pro M1 offers a dual setup with a 13-megapixel sensor and a 5-megapixel sensor at the back. The camera quality seems flawless and awesome for selfies and live video recording. There are no mentions of OIS or EIS and users will have to make do with portrait mode. The rear camera focuses on the subject in less than the blink of an eye, and has a high-resolution up to 16 MP sensor with a high-quality f/2.0 wide-aperture lens that captures clearer photos, every time. The camera specifications aren’t particularly impressive.

Asus had already revealed that the phone will be powered by an octa-core processor and the other key specs of the phone are 18:9 FHD+ display, stock Android Oreo, dual rear cameras and a 5,000mAh battery.
