Beverley Carridice, Lutchman’s grandmother, told NBC News he had suffered from psychological problems since boyhood and had recently attempted suicide by stabbing himself in the stomach. It said he had been in contact this month with a person claiming to be a member of the Islamic State militant group in Syria.

The FBI said the confidential source has been paid for cooperation on another case, and has a felony and misdemeanor on his criminal record.

Lutchman was arrested on Wednesday after recording a video on his mobile phone pledging fealty to Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo told Time Warner Cable News that officials believe Lutchman became a Muslim while serving his sentence at Wyoming Correctional Facility in western NY.
