A brace by substitute Olivier Giroud inspired Chelsea to a come-from-behind 3-2 win over relegation-threatened Southampton.

It went from joyous to frenzy for the Saints when youngster Jan Bednarek, in his first start, doubled the lead with a well-taken half-volley off a free-kick from Ward-Prowse on 58 minutes.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte admits he was angered and disappointed by his side’s lack of “desire” and “will to fight” in the first half, but also pleased by their reaction in the second half.

Giroud hailed his first two league goals for Chelsea and then paid tribute to the character of Antonio Conte’s men. Chelsea too put up some dismal performances epitomised by a return of 4 wins in 2018 this calendar year.

Willian’s 55th-minute shot was their first effort on target, and there were question marks over the application of several players in the build-up to both Saints goals.

“I’m very happy for him [Giroud]”, said Conte in his post-match press conference.

“As has been the case all year, apparently we’ve got a soft underbelly”, he said. – Dusan Tadic has been directly involved in 45 Premier League goals since his debut in August 2014 (18 goals, 27 assists), 14 more than any other Southampton player.

Antonio Conte’s men have been in an bad run of form, winning only two of their last eight Premier League games. “This is the best way for a player to show that they are a fantastic professional”.

Hughes may point to Alonso’s challenge on Long, which should have seen Chelsea go down to ten men, as the unfortunate event which sees them remain in the relegation zone after such a promising start, but their second half display was too sloppy, and their actions too overwrought when it mattered.

“I think that I can’t accept these comments because I think that I was a player and that the player must play every game, not for me, but for the club and fans”, Conte told reporters at St Mary’s Stadium.

In the same way we did not give up in Saturday lunchtime’s game, we are not giving up in the chase for a top-four place either. “We showed the right fire in our eyes”. He has managed to only score one goal, which came against Hull City during an FA Cup clash, and he has mainly been used as a backup option to Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard.

A retrospective ban could rule Alonso out of a rematch between the teams in the FA Cup semifinals on April 22.
