The Senate amended its bill to limit which teachers could volunteer to go through law enforcement training and carry guns in schools.

“We know that force on force is a deterrent”, Oliva told the House. Democrats dislike the guardian program because it would allow for more guns in schools, and some Republicans have decried the gun control provisions.

They want a law that will keep guns out of the hands of disturbed people, provide more mental health services, and harden schools.

Scott “has also expressed concern over the three-day waiting period now included in the Legislation”, Schenone said in the Tuesday night statement.

But neither measure expands background checks or curbs access to weapons – gun-control measures Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students have called for in the wake of the shooting that killed 17 of their classmates and staff.

“Holding a sitting on Saturday is the best option for both working within our existing rules and affording this legislation the serious time and consideration it deserves”, Negron, R-Stuart, said in Friday’s memo. Bill Galvano, who sponsored the bill, said he “did not want to include at this point a complete ban on firearms” because he thought the assault weapons ban would be unconstitutional.

Another Democratic amendment that failed would have allowed local authorities to make gun regulations for their communities.

As the federal government wrestles with tightening control of gun sales, which is complicated by the right to bear arms enshrined in the U.S. Constitution and by NRA lobbying, states are also rewriting their gun laws.

“Nobody needs a weapon that can shoot 10- or 20-round magazines”, said Rep. Joe Abruzzo, D-Boynton Beach.

Swift action in the Republican-controlled Tallahassee statehouse, where the National Rifle Association has long held sway, signalled a possible turning point in the national debate between gun control advocates and proponents of firearms rights enshrined in the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

“The goal is to make sure that those instructional personnel that are in the classroom can not participate in the program”, Garcia said to the Times.

Gov. Rick Scott has said he opposes arming teachers, and the program is opposed by most of the Florida Conference of Black State Legislators. For 15 minutes today, the Florida Senate approved legislation to stop the sale of AR-15s for two years.

Yet the Trump-haters used this tragedy to malign the President and bash his idea of arming qualified Teachers.

“This is a risky bill for people of color”, said Rep. Cynthia Stafford, D-Miami. “I think we have to call that what it is”.

Under the Senate plan, school boards can decide if they want to participate in the marshal program, but sheriffs would not have to implement it.

“All these people that have been defending teachers all these years are now saying they’re incompetent”, Porter said. “If you want to encourage others to join the fantastic students at Parkland at their march on the 24th”.
