Man City confirmed as champions as rivals United lose

On Sunday, City clinched the title from the comfort of their own homes (or the golf course, in Pep Guardiola’s case), as West Brom stunned Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Kompany and co. have the opportunity to secure the highest number of wins, points and goals scored in a Premier League season.

The France worldwide scored two goals – the first time he has done so in the Premier League – in a remarkable second-half recovery from United as they won the Manchester derby 3-2 to deny City a win that would have seen Pep Guardiola’s men clinch the title.

But, just a week after spoiling City’s title party by beating their local rivals 3-2 at the Etihad, the way United abjectly gifted the title to their neighbours will sting. He made them eat together after games and turned the wifi off so his players were encouraged to communicate with each other instead of staring at their phones.

An approach to the game which has a lineage back to the Dutch “total football” of the early 1970s, taken to Barcelona by Johann Cruyff and which Guardiola has adapted and evolved, requires not only a top skillset from the players but a change of mentality. United’s comeback at the Etihad from a 2-0 half-time deficit offered their supporters a rare fillip of flair and excitement after a hard season where their style of play has hardly endeared Jose Mourinho to the club’s fanbase.

Pep Guardiola’s side won the league with five games to spare, but in a manner most unexpected after a slip-up by their city rivals.

Now Guardiola can not say for certain when City’s all-time leading scorer will be available again.

It is City’s fifth English top-flight title, their last Premier League triumph having come in the 2013-14 season.

“I noticed within the first month that if I’d met him at 18 or 20 [years old] then I would’ve been the ideal player for him”, Kompany said.

Manchester City, we won it for you”, chanted the West Brom fans at the end of a match greeted by jeers by United supporters.

“It’s Ethan [Galbraith]’s first goal of the season but he hits them great in training and we see it day in and day out”. Two of the most potent attacks in Premier League history – Cristiano Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez v Aguero, Silva and De Bruyne – lead to plenty of goals.

City will now be looking to break the Premier League points record in their remaining five fixtures.

“Winning the Premier League is going to be one of the best three seasons I have ever had as a player and as a manager”.

Tottenham pulled one back, however, three minutes before halftime with a little bit of luck. “That has happened. We have to try to focus on our games – Tottenham, Swansea and after that”.

Apparently club superstars like Claudio Bravo and Phil Foden would be playing in City’s final game of the season as well.
