McSorley looked over the Hawkeyes’ defense, saw something he liked, ran up to the line and appeared to call an audible.
“It puts another weapon on the field”, Penn State coach James Franklin said.
Saquon Barkley had 211 yards rushing and 94 yards receiving for the Nittany Lions (4-0, 1-0), who outgained Iowa 579-273 but almost blew a game that could’ve been crippling to their postseason hopes.
Penn State’s 21-19 win over Iowa on Saturday night was a different story.
Iowa regained the lead in the second half, when back Akrum Wadley scored from 35 yards. Two incompletions followed, passes thrown to Thompkins and Hamilton.
McSorley hit Johnson for 12 yards on the first play to the 32.
“We had nearly two minutes, and three time-outs left, ” McSorley said.
That quick first step and exceptional athleticism separates Barkley from his peers.
Barkley had an incredible night making Hawkeye tacklers miss with his sensational footwork.
The former IN high school standout entered Penn State with sub-4.7 40-yard-dash speed and his long strides coupled with his cutting ability made him a good dual-threat candidate to lead Moorhead’s offense. But we need to have a sharp week in practice, [and] we need to get after it with high energy. “You let go and you let God happen”. But on fourth down, McSorley stood strong in the pocket and drilled the ball through a crowded end zone and into Johnson’s chest.
Trace McSorley made his share of mistakes.
Orgeron said he “just wanted to give Myles a chance with the game on the line”.
Since Franklin became Penn State coach in 2014, the Nittany Lions have won both of their games against the Scarlet Knights at High Point Solutions Stadium. The sophomore caught the game-winning touchdown and had seven catches.
The thing about Barkley is, he never stops moving his legs. His previous career best was 207. He also had 12 receptions for 94 yards.
In the fourth quarter and the hour or so of chaos at Kinnick post-game, I spent a lot of time trying to justify otherwise, but there was no way this wasn’t one of the best running back performances I’d ever seen.
“Two words”, Ferentz said.
McSorley finished 31-of-48 for 284 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Iowa plays at Michigan State next weekend.
Senior Simone Lee (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) was a key cog in the Nittany Lions recuperation from their loss to Nebraska on Friday evening.
To a degree, this is what the Nittany Lions do: Dating back to their improbable 2016 run, they come back late in games.
A once-sluggish Iowa team had come to life in the fourth quarter at home under the lights, and another top-five opponent was set to go down.
Time to give Penn State’s defense its due.
“Night games at Kinnick are just unbelievable, ” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. He also has 335 receiving yards, just 67 shy of last year’s season total.
For Penn State the objective is simple: keep winning.
It kept running back Saquon Barkley, who had 305 total yards so far, in to block. Offensively, Iowa is averaging 33 points and 398.3 yards per game. (Minnesota is No. 1, with 32.) Penn State is No. 1 in the nation in tackles for a loss (41) and tied for No. 1 with Virginia in red zone defense (1 TD, 2 FGs in 6 trips). Barkley broke off a highlight-reel 44-yard run down the left sideline, and the Lions later got another first-and-goal, this time from the 10. For that, they have nobody to thank but Saquon Barkley. He started off by taking a short wheel route throw in open space and going to the house for a long touchdown.
Defensive line: They got to Iowa QB Nate Stanley just once, but they pressured him enough to affect the passing game.
Barkley rushed for 211 yards and a touchdown in the 21-19 Nittany Lion victory. Anxious about Barkley on another wheel route? Down four with 1 minute, 42 seconds left in regulation, the Nittany Lions knew it.
