‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ Tops Box Office; ‘Finest Hours’ Flounders

Prospects are bright for China, given its status as a local co-production, which means it’s not part of the 34-title annual quota for USA films.

Fox’s Kung Fu Panda 3 debuted to an estimated $41 million, earning the best opening weekend of 2016 (so far).

“The “Kung Fu Panda” franchise was a summer mainstay”, Dergarabedian said.

But what’s more impressive than all of that is it’s actually a solid movie.

Forbes notes, however, that if Kung Fu Panda 3 fails to meet box office expectations then Hollywood might have “lost its competitive edge in the world’s most strategically important box office territory”.

The original Kung Fu Panda grossed $60.2 million during its opening frame in June 2008. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has managed to stay in the top three for seven consecutive weeks, bringing its domestic gross to a staggering $895 million and its worldwide gross to $1.9 billion.

The Revenant remained a solid draw in second place in its fourth weekend of wide release, thanks to its dozen Oscar nominations and DiCaprio’s star power.

“The Finest Hours”, starring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck, performed in line with muted forecasts but the results are an obvious disappointment for Disney, given its reported $70 million budget.

Rounding out the top five was Universal’s Ride Along 2 with an estimated $8.3 million from 2,412 theaters.

The critically eviscerated spoof of Fifty Shades of Black from Marlon Wayans was expected to open around $10 million. The family film cost around $145 million to produce. The studio has been struggling in recent years with several underperforming films and has been much in need of a boost from an existing franchise.

Former champion “The Revenant” is pushed down one position to No. 2 with approximately $12.4 million. The film also had a strong opening in Korea, where it debuted on 1,300-plus screens and took $11.4 million, $380,000 of which was from the 17 participating IMAX theaters.
